Tributes To Those No Longer With Us

 

Gall

Robert Harkness would like to pay tribute to his gran and papa Gall from Little Mark Farm who retired to Lime Road and then 92 Pathhead.  They were married for 62 years.

 

 

Alec Rollie

In memory of Alec Rollie who passed away on the 31st March 2005.

One of the best , gone but not forgotten.

Your stories at Loch Park were treasures.

 

 Jimmy McKnight

The village of New Cumnock was saddened to learn of the death of Jimmy McKnight on 3rd May 2008. Jimmy was a dear friend and workmate who loved his football. He played junior football and then went on to play for senior clubs, including Ayr United, Queen of the South and Stranraer. He also coached Glenafton Athletic for many years. He was married to Mary for 54 years and they had three of a family, Sam, John and Isabel, two Grand children, Rhona and Mhairi and two great-grandchildren, Mason and Grace.
He will be sadly missed.

 

Frank Dalzell

Frank passed away on the 14th of April, 2008.
He attended the Town School and worked for Black the painter, serving his time as a painter and decorator. The former resident of 27 Lime Road, married his wife Margaret and had two children Richard and Scott before moving to Dreghorn to work for Monsanta. He later returned to the painting trade and moved to Hurlford.
His interests included the Masons where he became a Grand Master in different lodges.

Frank will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

 

Sally Cameron

Sally Was the wife of Jim Cameron, mother of Elaine, Suzanne and gran of Amy.  Sally who died peacefully at Ayr Hospital on the 23rd October, 2002 was a great Glens fan and worked endlessly for the club taking admission money at the gates, making the tea for the players and even washing the strips.  She will be greatly missed by all at Glenafton Athletic FC and by all who knew her.
Sally is pictured holding the Scottish Junior Cup.

 

Martin Campbell

Martin passed away on the 15th December 2003 at the age of 49 is pictured with the West of Scotland Cup which the Glens won in 2003.
Martin was a good friend to many and a life long Glenafton supporter and is sadly missed.

 Hugh Campbell

Hugh was the father of Martin who we paid tribute to above, was better known to many as Curly died on the 29th of December 2003 aged 78. Hugh was a former president of the Glens in the late 1960’s and helped the club in any way he could through out his life. Hugh, who will be sadly missed is pictured with the plaque commemorating the opening of the Campbell Hall.

 

Billy Blackmore

Billy grew up at Lochside with his grandparents and was educated at the Town School, New Cumnock.  He was in the RAF for three years before running a fishmongers in Auchinleck and then took up employment at the Barony where he became the miners union Rep for many years.
Billy entered university and graduated with a PHD in economics, taking up a position as a college lecturer in Hertfordshire.

 

John  Quinn

Born on 2nd January, 1940, John led a full and enjoyable life and was married to Pat for 48 years resulting in four children, eight Grandchildren and one Great Grandchild. John is pictured left with his Great Grandchild.
He lived in New Cumnock and commenced work as an apprentice toolmaker aged 16 before moving to Irvine in 1964. Later in 1984 he moved again, this time to Yorkshire, before settling in Yarm, Cleveland.
John sadly passed away, after surgery on 31st of August, 2008 but will never be forgotten by anyone whose life he has touched.

 

Jane Robertson Roy

Born at 2 Store Row, Connelpark on the 28th or April, 1917, she was a New Cumnock girl through and through.  Her last wish was to be taken back to New Cumnock and her family abided by her wish and brought her ashes back to New Cumnock to be scattered in all the places she loved .     Jane passed away on the 1st of June, 2009, aged 92. She was a beautiful lady and will be missed so much by her family.

 

Frank and Helen Brown

Fiona Gilbert would like to pay tribute to her Mother Helen Brown nee Dewar and Father Francis Brown Jr. Frank had battled Alzheimers before passing away on the 12th of November 2009, whilst Helen died on the 26th of July 2008.

Frank was the son of Francis Brown Sr, known as ‘Fanny Broon’ and was the half brother of Alec Strachan.  Helen’s parents were Thomas and Agnes Dewar, formally of Wishaw but dwelled at Afton Lea.  Frank and Helen once live at 27 Holm Road.
