New Cumnock News – Easter Monday 2019

The Swimming Pool

New Cumnock swimming pool has been a great success since it opened and is one of the few to actually make a profit.  On Easter Monday, the 22nd April, cars were making there way south at the end of the Easter Holiday.  However, many cars were parked along the Castle as people visited the pool which was queued out.

Pathbrae Road Repair

The Pathbrae road at the station has been under repair for six weeks now causing some disruption due to the traffic lights.  The repairs are due to the wall collapsing into the field at the side opposite the station.  This repair involved building up the supporting side and replacing the wall with a crash barrier.  Tonight the widened road is being resurfaced and has been closed from 6.00pm until 6.00am tomorrow morning.

The road at the station has finally been repaired and traffic lights removed.

New Cumnock News 27th January 2018

Stranded Worker Dies in Snowstorm

On Sunday two men were stranded during a snowstorm at a windfarm near New Cumnock.  They were rescued by the Police Scotland Mountain Rescue Team and one of the men, who was 74 years old, was airlifted to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where he died.  The two men were unable to report their plight as there was no mobile phone reception in the area.  Concerns were only raised when they failed to return home.  The incident took place near Craigdarroch Farm and an investigation is underway establish what happened.

A few months ago a visitor to the website asked me if I could trace a Beech Cottage near where his Great Grandfather, Robert Bannerman, died in a blizzard.  I made enquiries but was unable to find the cottage.  However, I did wonder about the name Beech and wondered if there could be slight mistake.  If the second ‘e’ was an ‘o’ it made more sense as there were cottages at Beoch Farm around 1874.  Further information confirmed that this was the area he was looking for.  Robert Bannerman lived with his wife and family at Beoch where there was mining activity being the most westerly of the New Cumnock workings.  On a Saturday night he had gone to Dalmellington a few miles along the road.  In the early hours of Sunday he had made his way back along the New Cumnock road and turned into the road to Beoch.  He got some 50 yards along this road before being overcome by the blizzard.  On Monday morning when the blizzard and snow had stopped, his wife and a neighbour set out to find him.  He was found at the side of the road covered in snow.

The area where Robert Bannerman was overcome by exposure and lay down.  The area would probably have been more exposed in 1874.

It seems incredible that 144 years later, another man should die from exposure in the hills around New Cumnock.

OBE Awarded to Gette Fulton

Gette Fulton who is a well known New Cumnock citizen was awarded the OBE by the Queen.  The award was from the New Year’s Honours List in January and the presentation was made in Edinburgh this month.

Gette was awarded the OBE for her services to Care of Police Survivors, St Andrew’s First Aid and the community in New Cumnock.  Gette is well known in New Cumnock for her work with the Community Open Air Pool and has the distinction of being the oldest qualified lifeguard in Scotland.  She is also very prominent in St Andrew’s First Aid and is a first aider at Kilmarnock Football Club.  Gette has also worked hard on the recent New Cumnock Action Plan.  I don’t think Gette can be praised highly enough for the work she has done for New Cumnock.  Her photo appears in several places in this website.

Swimming Pool Bought by Prince Charles

The Open Air Community Pool has been bought by The Great Stewards Trust.  This will become part of the other developments including the Town Hall and the square next to the swimming pool.  More information to follow.

New Cumnock News – week ending 13th February 2015

Special Community Council Meeting

A special Community Council meeting was held on Wednesday 10th February at 7.00pm in the community centre.  The purpose of the meeting was to explain the circumstances of the news that the community centre was to close on the 31st March.  I found the meeting to be a sad and depressing experience.  The councilors were very angry that this news was announced out of the blue with no consultation let alone any information that it was about to happen.  They went to some lengths to vent their anger that at no time were they consulted or made privy to what was happening.  The explanation to the news of the centre’s closure is that it is necessary to demolish the building in order to complete other aspects of development such as the extension of the swimming pool’s changing rooms.  A four week extension could be considered but that would eat into the time margin needed.  The audience who were present made their feelings known that it seemed yet another case of the population of New Cumnock being ignored and sidelined.  I might be understating this as one individual said that in her opinion, “East Ayrshire ends at Cumnock”  Some important points came out of the meeting:

1.  Several organisation/clubs use the community centre for their meetings

2.  The community council would lose their base and storage facility

3.  The only toilets available to the public will disappear

4.  The Town Hall may not be completed on schedule and extend the time in loss of facilities

Another meeting of the community council will be held in two weeks to come to a decision on the choices available.  One of the choices being holding meetings at Dumfries House with transport made available.  Completion date for the town hall is October 2016.

New Houses

Most people in New Cumnock will be aware that the site of the Arthur Memorial Church now has houses being very quickly built.  I began to take photos of the houses on Friday 12 February but the site was so busy I had to return on Sunday in the interests of my health and safety.

New Cumnock Community Centre to Close

News broke this week that New Cumnock Community Centre is to close.  It had been understood by most residents that the community centre would stay open until the Town Hall had been refurbished but now it will close in March.  This sudden announcement has caused great anger in New Cumnock.  East Ayrshire Council has stated that this is all part of the plans for the future of the village in collaboration with the Great Steward of Scotland’s Dumfries House Trust.  They argue that it is necessary to provide the space for the contractor to establish a working site for the swimming pool.

A meeting has been called on February 10th at 7.00pm in the community centre.

The Prestwick Ayr show took place last weekend with spectacular displays by the Red Arrows, a Catalina Flying Boat, a B17 and a Vulcan Bomber.  It seems that there was high drama as the landing gear of the Vulcan Bomber developed a fault and there was a possibility that it would have to ditch in the sea at Ayr.

I was washing my car on Sunday afternoon when I heard a noise and looked up.  I recognised the V Bomber and ran into the house for my camera.  However, the Vulcan was travelling at quite a speed and by the time I took a photo it was passing me in the distance.

New Cumnock News – week ending 4th July 2015

Arthur Memorial Time Capsule

As reported earlier, the Arthur Memorial Church was recently demolished.  In the process of demolition, a time capsule was discovered behind the memorial stone above the door of the church.  Also found was the church bell with the date 1885 which had been previously hung in the original Free Church.   WL McClounie, who were carrying out the demolition, secured the capsule, bell and a small stone cross from the church roof and transferred it for safe keeping to the family home at Meikle Garclaugh Farm.

The Reverend Helen Cuthbert and Bobby Guthrie, one of New Cumnock’s well known historians, visited the farm where the time capsule was opened.  Inside the metal cannister was a sealed glass bottle containing a 1912 edition of the Cumnock Chronicle, a William Arthur Dux Medal and various coins of that time.  There was also a small box with items that had formed a previous time capsule from 1843 for the previous church.  It is hoped to mount a display of these items later in the year at the parish church.

More information on this can be found on Bobby Guthrie’s website www.newcumnockheritage.com

New Cumnock News – week ending 9th November 2014

Afton Wind Farm

The Scottish Government has given the go ahead for the proposed Afton wind farm which will be sited near the Glenafton Reservoir.  This has raised fears of contamination to the reservoir although Scottish Water say water supplies will not be affected.  The windfarm will have a maximum generating capacity of 74MW.

What’s It All About?

I was confused when I heard that yet another wind farm was to be built on Waterboard land at the reservoir, without it seemed, prior consultation as has been the case with other wind farms.  When I looked into it, I came to realise that there are two types of development.  The first is by the Scottish Government to ensure and maintain power supplies which were ‘green’ and the second is by private companies.  I then discovered that the government plans to build wind farms have been around for some time.

The original government proposal was to build 7 wind farm in or near New Cumnock.  Hare Hill which has been in existence for some years now was to be expanded to add another 29 turbines.  Two wind farms will border the reservoir with one being just inside Dumfries and Galloway.  This development is called, “THE SOUTH WEST SCOTLAND RENEWABLES PROJECT”.

Where Does the Generated Power Go?

I was told that things were happening on the Dalmellington Road just beyond Nith Lodge so I went to have a look.

I discovered that an electricity sub-station is being built on the left side of the road and on the right side electric pylons stretch away through Kyle Forest.

Here are the photos and info.

The Mackinnon Report

The Mackinnon Report into the management of opencast mines by East Ayrshire Council has been published.

It is highly critical over failures by the council over failure to report facts; failure to oversee what was going on; failure to challenge , monitor or properly scrutinise the contracts and the performance of the coal operators.  The failure could cost the public of East Ayrshire £133 million.  This is the estimate of the cost of restoring land after mining operations.

Council Chief Executive Fiona Lees has apologised for the ‘serious and persistant failures’ in the Council’s dealings with the opencast mining operations.  She has stated that matters will be put right and will never happen again.

Local MP Sandra Osborne has called for financial assistance from the Scottish and Westminster Governments for ‘what is an environmental disaster’.

Racist Chants

John Stewart, Glenafton Secretary, has written a strongly worded letter to the Cumnock Chronicle regarding last week’s front page story of ‘racist chants’.  He states that there has been no official letter or email from the SJFA or from Largs Football Club.  He confirms that there has also been no report from the referee or fourth official who was in the stand.

Also, the video record of the game had been examined carefully and nothing found.

The Editor replied that the story was accurate in what was reported.

The Cumnock Chronicle reports that during the Glenafton v Largs Thistle football match on Saturday, one of the Largs players was verbally abused.  Glens Secretary John Stewart insists that the Glenafton committee did not hear anything.  The Largs side are not happy with what they say happened.

New Cumnock News – week ending 13th October

Wind Farm Victory

Dalmellington anti-wind farm campaigners have succeeded in having a developer’s bid thrown out by the Scottish Government.  Infinis had had their plans rejected by Michael Cunliffe who was appointed by the Scottish Government after two months of deliberations.  He concluded that the turbines would have a negative impact on tourism and the amenity of the area.  Campaigners were absolutely delighted at this decision to stop wind farms being built so close to the town.

Pathhead Bakery

The bakery was cleared of selling cakes with inappropriate levels of Buckfast to young people.  An inspection by East Ayrshire Council cleared the bakery of using high levels of Buckfast when the process was shown to burn off the alcohol.

Dalmellington Road Closed

The Dalmellington road was closed on Tuesday when a power transformer caught fire and exploded.  The road was closed for most of the day until 2.30pm.  Power was restored at around 3.00pm.

New Cumnock History Club

The History Club is in danger of closing if a new Secretary and Treasurer are not appointed.  The club has been in existence for many years but has lost many members through ill health and age.  The club desperately needs new members and office bearers.  The quality of speakers and presentations has always been high and it will be a sad day if new members and office bearers are not found.  Regular speakers in the past have been Chris Rollie, Bobby Guthrie, Rab Wilson and many other fine presenters.

Alex Jess has kindly contributed his weekly news to the website.

Alex has had to give up the New Cumnock News, which is published in the Cumnock Chronicle and here on the website, for family reasons.  I would like to thank Alex for his many contributions and other aspects of effort and time he gave for the benefit of the town.

New Cumnock News week ending 18th August 2013

Swimming Pool

It has been a monumentally terrific effort by the volunteers who took over after Nerv was forced to close the Pool due to the lack of funding.

The group of volunteers took on what looked like an impossible task and overcame a multitude of problems to finally succeed, with the Pool up and running and looking pristine and magnificent.  A new feature is the disabled lift, which will allow disabled people to use the facility without what used to be a bit of a struggle – well done on that.

There is also the poolside cafe which is excellent.  The weather has been great leading to fabulous attendances, long may it continue!

The whole town thanks  the volunteers and wish them every success in the future.

Also worth noting it is an outdoor Pool and there are very few of these left.

Art Exhibition

Chasing Sun Sets – A solo Art Exhibition, featuring original and local oil paintings by Julie H. Winter.  Date Thursday August 22nd  –  Sunday August 25th 2013.  between  11 am and  7 pm daily.

Venue Afton Water Water Gallery at the Doctors House,  Afton Road New Cumnock.

This Exhibition boasts an exhilarating collection of artworks by the talented local artist, Julie H. Winter and includes several paintings that feature water in some way and show off the West Coast of Ayrshire to its fullest with beautiful sunsets at Turnberry,  Dunure, The Heads of Ayr and coming further inland, Loch Doon.

Julie has been inspired to paint the local area of Mauchline,  Auchinleck, Cumnock and Sanquhar based in colours in a photograph by local Historian and keen photographer Bobby Guthrie,  who thought New Cumnock was on fire on his way home one day in the early part of this Summer.

Hope runs high that local people, their friends and family will enjoy the Exhibition and the weather will hold so that they can enjoy the beautiful views from the Gallery and the hearty food served on Saturday and Sunday between 1 pm – 5 pm at the Hillside Inn, just above the Gallery inside Glenafton Caravan Park.

Julie would like to thank all the local people who have shown their support by attending previous Exhibitions and purchasing her original works.  She is delighted to be part of the community of New Cumnock where the kindness of folk and the local landscape are always an inspiration to her.

Glenafton Athletic

A wee word about the Glens.  After a great season, the West of Scotland cup in the cupboard and 4th place in the Premier League, after looking like relegation fodder. The Committee and fans were looking forward to a big season.

Instead of which many of last season’s successful team have left for Hurlford.  However, one of the club’s  succesfull past managers has stepped into the breach and already has juggled into the camp some useful looking players.

The hard working committee could do with a few faces on board to sharing the workload mind you.

Countryside Watch

An enormous amount of Swallows/House Martins collected the other morning and by early afternoon the biggest majority of them were on their way to warmer climes. The few pairs left still with young in the nest.

The beautiful big Barn Owl was on show at night also.  Spotted some Bats flying around as the night darkened.  Used to be a lot of them about but in smaller numbers this time.

Lorries

A word on the wood lorries.  It appears they are now running as they should be and adhering to the rules. They are allowed to run empty trucks on the Boig Road but the loaded ones are forbidden.  Thanks to Barney Menzie’s  and his staff for their help in this matter.

New Businesses

Investors in New Cumnock who don’t believe we are the worst place to live in Scotland include a new hairdressers, new bookmakers, new doctors surgery and new convenience store.  All can do a job for the wee toon.

We the people should get behind and support the new businesses starting up or modernising. These are people prepared to support the town, even after all the adverse and disgraceful amount of bad publicity we have had levied upon us with the awarding of the Carbuncle or Plook Award.

On behalf of the Newsletter Group we would like to thank the local and new businesses wishing them every success.

Countryside Watch

While travelling the Boig Road and just approaching the top of the Ha’Runnel my attention was caught by a magnificent site of a huge Red Kite in full flight with a fair sized animal in its talons. What a beautiful and graceful bird.

A lot of activity is going on in the skies over our toon.  Swallows/House Martins, Starlings still showing their flying skills in groups. The noisey Seagulls and Crows/Jackdaws all gettiing in on the act.  Look to the skies folks many sights and sounds to see and hear.  The beautiful Butterfly in the photo is just one of the visitors to our garden.

Boig Road

A reply from East Ayrshire regarding the the timber hauling on the Boig road.

Although Boig Road, New Cumnock ( C36 ) is an excluded timber route the restrictions only apply while Transporting Timber and not whilst running empty.  This is generally not being adhered to. Further action needed by East Ayrshire Council as they are running to hard past to identify the culprits.

History Club

It is with great regret that the committee of the club are finding it difficult to carry on.  This has been an institution in the village for many years.

It has had some great speakers over the years including many locals like Bobby Guthrie, Chris Rollie, Stephen Kennedy and Rhona Brown.  It will be a great shame if it had to pack in altogether but the variety of available speakers is getting fewer.

Hopefully some of the younger members might consider taking it forward.

Countryside Watch

A surprise visitor was a big fat Robin.  Cant be time for snow just yet.  Weather has held up well even the Midges find it to warm.  A flock of Geese clashed with a bunch of Crows and a lot of noise was exchanged but no serious injuries.  The Daddy and Jenny Long legs are invading but harmless creatures.  Saw one of them getting snaffled by a young nearly tame Blackbird.

Survival of the fittest.

Weather

A mention for the hard working farmers who are getting a well deserved break like us all with this wonderful spell of weather we are having.

It has allowed for hay making in good conditions for a change.

The animals in the fields are also enjoying the break.

Don’t lets forget the farming community keep our surrounding countryside in splendid shape and a joy to see.

Keep up the good work guys and gals.

Margaret Park

Connelpark and indeed New Cumnock lost one of their own, Margaret ( Meg ) Park who died suddenly through the week.

A well kent figure who spent all her working life or less with Stevensons Dairy Farms.

She loved life with the dancing a big part of her social life.  Meg sometimes known as Mag did not take prisoners and said it as it was.

She was truly a larger than life person who did not allow the Bingo caller to make any mistakes or woe betide him.

She will be sorely missed by all who knew her and condolences to her daughter Tracey and all the Park family.

She is gone but wont be forgotten.

Countryside Watch

Spotted a very large Grey Heron diving into a nearly empty Connel Burn at Murray’s brig, where obviously a small water pool would contain trapped fish.  An easy meal.

The Oyster Catchers are also buzzing about all day giving out their alarm call in flight.

Spotted the big Hare eating away whena big Tabby cat came on the scene .

The cat sauntered up then thought twice about it and scurried away into somebody’s garden.

There are a lot of young Blackbirds entering the garden for food as brave as you like and bonny looking birds to boot.

 Trucks

A wee bit of nostalgia last Saturday afternoon when a huge line of vehicles from way back came trundling through Connelpark, Burnfoot and Dalleagles  en route for an old crocks motor show over the hill.

All sorts of hauliers and many from England. The weather was lovely and I’m sure they were enjoyed by all who seen them and much photographed too.

Swimming Pool

The wonderful weather we are at long last enjoying is being really appreciated by the pools committee who are reaping the benefits. With loads of children and parents making the best of the conditions.

A wee tea room on the spot is doing a bomb and much appreciated.  Great to see the hard work of a dedicated bunch of New Cumnockians who gave up many hours in the battle for funding etc. to keep the project ticking along.  Where are the ”PLOOK ” committee now I ask.

Lorries

The  wood lorries are still using the Boig road willy nilly when it suits them. Could someone tell me if they have permission to do so as it is my understanding that they are barred from using it.  I have said it before and will say it again its an accident waiting to happen at the Ha’ Runnel.  I hope I am wrong.

The New Shop

The long awaited opening of the Premier store has happened.  Another wee bit of the village tidied up and by all accounts worth a visit. A big effort is being put in by the Community Council and Steering Group among others to get our heads held high.

It’s our place and worth fighting for.  So keep up the good work please.

Silver Jubilee Programme

Excerpts from the Silver Jubilee programme.  Glenafton Reservoir and the Filtration Plant scheme and the Afton Afforestation scheme are open to visitors on application for a permit.

A Picnic at the Burns Cairn Site developed by the local Burns Club provides good amenities for Family Groups.

The Three Lochs, Creoch, Loch O’ The Lowes and Black Loch.   Relics of a Prehistoric Lake Settlement, can provide Coarse Fishing, Canoeing and Boating with plans afoot to develop these in a grander scale.

Bird Watching – The area behind the lochs is a well known sanctuary where many rare birds can be observed by the keen Ornithologists.

Rambling – There are many other places of interest which the tourist can enjoy on foot – Limestone Workings Covenanter’s  Monument, Castle Ruin – Open Air Swimming Pool. There is an update Heated Swimming Pool situated in the Castle Area of the village.

This is also the Main Shopping Centre.

 Countryside Watch

. Its all happening in the wildlife colonies who are fairly enjoying the excellent weather. The Big Hare is being spotted constantly and Barn Owls a sight to see hunting.

The Stuckies are out in force and in flying formation which is quite spectacular.  Also it is comical watching the Mother Starlings feeding the wee yins –  some of them bigger than Maw.

The gardens are looking in prime condition just now with the flowers really opening out. Long may it continue.

Early Learning Centre

The Early Learning Centre held their Church service in the Parish Church conducted in her own inimitable style by the Rev. Helen Cuthbert, ably backed by Mrs. Hill and her dedicated band of teachers and helpers.

The kids served up a very entertaining Summer service with singing that occasionally could have been heard at Kirkconnel.  New Cumnock definitely has talent.

The day was beautifully finished off with the older of the young ones who stepped up for their graduation after the holidays and were resplendent in their cloaks and caps.

A great turnout of parents and families made it a day to remember.

Countryside Watch

The Barn Owl night hunting and a great sight to see.

The Owl like all other species is being seen less and less, their numbers dwindling.

Unfortunately the Hedgehog road kill is evident too as they are wandering about.

The Hares are also being spotted round and about.

At the start of last week the moon was spectacular over the Afton hills.

History

Silver Jubilee Year – a brief history

Vesting Day January 1, 1947 was when the National Coal Board came into operation.

Agriculturally the Parish has been restricted because of its poor surface soil and upland moorland. Farming tended to be a family occupation in the Parish and this exist even today.

A look around the sweet Afton Water immortalised by Rabbie Burns flows gently down the beautiful Glen Afton which attracts visitors at all times of the year.

Hill walking, climbing, orienteering and fishing are very popular attractions and an excellent new caravan park  affords chalet and caravan accommodation as a starting point.

Countryside Watch

Good news with a good wee spell of weather – the bad news is the midges are in full flight.

A big Heron makes regular flights over Connelpark and you could just about set your clock with its timing.

Spotted a beautiful Barn Owl on top of a telegraph pole, poised to dive for food for its family who have have a regular barn they use every year.

A friend had a recent Scottish visitor which has been named as an Elephant Hawk Moth beautifully coloured yellow and greenish.

A few starling flocks have also been spotted although like a lot of our bird species in less numbers.

The bees and butterflies have enjoyed our pleasant weather spell and good to see.

 Afton Cemetery

There are many complaints coming in regarding the state of the Afton Cemetery, especially the old one.
Material being put down to curb the grass is having a burning effect and certainly not enhancing the place .
The workers are working under instructions so no blame whatsoever to them. Visitors from near and far visit what was once a real pride and joy and comfort.  A few of the complaints are from them.
These are sad times due to the cut backs and we, as usual, are right in the middle of it.

History

A brief History of New Cumnock.
For Ecclesiastical reasons the Commissioners for the plantation of kirks, divided the Barony into two and the greater area of 48,000 sparsley populated acres was renamed New Cumnock and since the 17th Century it has altered little geographically.
The 18th Century saw the beginnings of the Limestone workings and coal mining. The Cornstone kilns at Craig Dullyeart produced Lime for agricultural purposes and deposits are still present though perhaps not economically viable.
Sir C. Stewart Menteith of Mansfield and William Hyslop of Bank amalgamated to form the New Cumnock Colliery Company and began the development of the coal mining industry on a model scale and the company continued until vesting day January 1st 1947 when the National Coal board came into operation.

New Cumnock Primary

New Cumnock Primary had their Sports day last Thursday in the morning with the Early Learning Centre little ones following up in the early afternoon. The venue was Loch Park, home of the Glens. It was a beautiful day which is an unusual surprise as it usually rains.  Some exciting races in the morning and entertainment plus from the wee yins. Who had flat races and egg and spoon ones for appropriate age groups.  Some photo finishes were the order of the day.  With medals all round.  It was rounded off with the parents of the wee ones who had a Dads’ race and a Mums’ race.
Very competetive they were too.  A large turnout enjoyed a memorable day.  Well done again to Mrs. Hill and her teachers / helpers who made the day possible.

Shutter Missing

It has been brought to attention that an upstairs window in the derelict Ladeside store the Castle has lost its shutter. This has exposed the window to a possible fall to the ground with frightening consequences.  Could the appropriate owners get this sorted please?

Countryside Watch

A great spell of weather has brought out all the birds, bees and insects of all varieties in abundance.  Spotted a Queen Wasp feeding on a tree bark no doubt readying a Byke for all her flock.  The odd wee midge is starting to appear especially when you water the garden later on.  A flock of Field Fare also flew over the roof tops food hunting through the gardens.  Finding lots of wee newly born birds usually House Sparrows lying dead on the ground.  Suspect they have either been pushed out their nests or taken out by the many Crows / Jackdaws etc.  The Cabbage White Butterflys are plentiful so far.

A lorry was sent back in the Boig Road away from the Ha’ Runnel.  They are not supposed to use that route due to the deterioration of the very large bankings at the side of the road.  There were pegs put in to see if and how much it was receeding.  The pegs have all landed in the River Nith.  It’s an accident waiting to happen.

Countryside Watch

The Swallows/Housemartins are making frantice efforts to nest in their old haunts.  They can make a bit of a mess unfortunately and are not always welcome visitors.                                                     Saw a big hare risk its life racing across a busy road, leaping a fence as though it was not there.     We have a blackbird singing for all its worth and lovely it is as long as you like that sort of thing.           There also appear to be a lot of moths flying around and they can be destructive especially inside the house.

The Coffee Bean

The Coffee Bean opens its doors at the Church Hall on Thursday 6th June from 9.45am to 11.45am     Enjoy a cuppa and a good blether in friendly surroundings.  Why not come along and join in, all welcome.

Jubilee Brochure
Courtesy of Mr. John Wight A mini brochure was produced by the appeals committee as part of the activities to mark the Queens Siver Jubilee.  All money raised during the year will be spent on approved projects and we would welcome any suggestions for submission nationally.  It is to be hoped that some worthwhile project can be implemented in our community and be properly maintained long after the Jubilee year has passed.  The souvenir brochure costs 20p.

New Cumnock History
A brief History of New Cumnock.  Historically the vilage grew up around Black Craig castle.  The hereditary seat of the Earls of March or Dunbar.  From ” Wallace and his times ” by J. Paterson it is quoted that ” Sir William Wallace ” in the Winter of 1296 three months good test in the family seat of Dunbar, the Regal Baron of Cumnock. ” The castle site is occupied by the Arthur Memorial manse adjoining the church and was a natural mound overlooking the area.  A moat surrounding the castle was reputedly filled with water brought from Garscadden loch ( Lowesmuir ) on wooden troughs, but the elevation features makes this scarcely feasible.  The Leggate and Coupla indicate access from the East to the West.  More to follow .

Hairdressers
The wee former chippy many moons ago always referred to as Mary Mill’s chip shop along Afton Bridgend is being revitalised as a hairdressers salon.  So all the best to the owners and another wee place tidied up in the village.

Countryside Watch
A Redstart has been spotted and the old noisy Oyster catchers are flying about.  Afraid as yet no Cuckoo sound, not by me anyway.  Pheasants are having a good year and wander across roads willy nilly.  What about the moon above the Afton hills the other two nights.  Absolutely spectacular.  A few sunny days appearing but oh that wind!  Greenery slowly coming back to the trees but Privet hedges very slow.  The colourful daffodils have had a short season as well.
The old Crows and the Buzzards are still annoying one another so no change there.  Plenty still to see and do, so why not try the Lagoons to shake away the cobwebs.

Coffee Bean
The Coffee Bean opens its doors at the Church Hall on Thursday 30th May from 9.45 am to 11.45 am.   A wee cuppa and a good natter in friendly surroundings.  Why not come along?  All welcome

Cup Final
Saturday 1st June is the date for the West of Scotland Cup Final and the Glens are in it.  So if you can try and get there to support the boys who will give it their all for you and our wee community.  Newlandsfield Pollok is the venue.   kick off time is 2pm and opponents are Glasgow Perthshire.
A good match guaranteed.

New Cumnock News week ending 26th May 2013

Early Childhood Centre

New Cumnock Early Childhood Centre are holding their Summer Eco day on Friday 24th May 2013 from 10am to 1.30pm

A variety of stalls as well as Strawberry Tea will be available.  Please come along and visit our new establishment if you have not already done so.

The Centre had a very successful sponsored walk along the recently laid new path by the Afton to where it meets the Nith.  Then back round what’s left of the running  thanks to their dedicated staff.  They do a great job to help them learn a lot before their next big step.

Future New Cumnock

A meeting was held on Thursday night past entitled, ‘Future New Cumnock the Next Steps’.

It got off to a bad start.  Firstly for a meeting to last from 7pm to 9pm there were no seating arrangements.  There was a wall of noise existing with everyone talking to the one or two advisors on hand.  The big topic being the very threatened closure of The Community Centre, Town Hall, Games Hall, Library and Greenhead Parks and Pavilion.  For the record the town hall is falling to bits due to long term neglect of maintenance.  Demolition is the more likely outcome.

The Community Centre is the heart of the town with over thirty active groups taking part in it.  Where do they all go? The Games Hall is another community hub of activity. The Library is a wee lifeline for some people as well.  Greenhead pavilion and two football pitches up for grabs too it seems.  The common theme for the young is that they have nothing to do. There are going to be a lot of them with less to do when that happens.  The Church Hall was suggested as on alternative.  However, you can’t play football etc. in a church hall.   To most of our good citizens unless something drastic happens they are going to ask, ‘What Future New Cumnock?

The latest and at least some good news is that the work going on at the Co-op building is going to be a Super market type Hardware, Groceries etc. shop.  It is to be called Premier New Cumnock.  It will be officially opened on Wednesday 19th June 2013.  A tea room is next on the list to seat twenty-one.   Another building tidied up and the tea room will hopefully pull in some passing trade who would otherwise travel through.

Countryside Watch

Mon.  (May 13th)  rain, high wind, sleet and cold.

Tues. Snow on the hills and Black Craig was white.

Wed. Nice morning, misty but clouded up and got cold later.

Thurs.  A lovely day for most of it.  A little cooler later on.

Frid.  Lovely, sunny breezy but not cold.

Sat.  Wall to wall rain all day sometimes torrential.

Sun.  A dry dull calmer day.

Summertime where are you?

Glens

All Welcome

New Cumnock News week ending 19th May 2013

Community Council Meeting

The meeting called by the Community Council with Banks Renewables Windfarm Company was well attended in spite of the dreadful weather conditions.

The site would be located on High Cumnock, a new name to me. There would be eight turbines that were not too visible from the village.  The Company made it clear they wanted to have a closer liaison with the local Community.  They have had many letters of support from New Cumnock residents and surely a healthy financial package cannot be turned down. The Community and local businesses will benefit greatly in the future and it is our young people’s future.  The actual total support or otherwise came to:  Support 41%; Support with reservations 31% and 19% against. It has been suggested that forming a separate committee with representatives from various groups be created to liaise with East Ayrshire Council on financial arrangements.

On the travelling people’s issue, word coming out of East Ayrshire is that it will not be at Knockshinnoch.  I sincerely hope this is the case as criteria has came to light contained within Scottish Office guidance that have drawn up a league table for places most suited to the siting of the travellers. Top of the table was:  1) Furnace Rd. Muirkirk;  2) Holm Quarry Rd. Kilmarnock;  3) Smallburn Rd. Muirkirk; 4) Queens Drive Kilmarnock; 5) Ayr Rd. Kilmarnock;  6) Hannahston Dr., Drongan;  7) Dalconner Rd. by Auchinleck;  8) Mauchline Bing by Mauchline;   9) Dalricket Mill by New Cumnock;  10) Knockshinnoch, New Cumnock.  I would ask anyone who has not read the splendidly worded letter in last week’s edition of the Chronicle to please do so.

Early Childhood Learning Centre

New Cumnock Early Childhood Learning Centre is holding the Summer Eco day on Friday 24th May 2013 from 10.00am till 1.30pm.  A variety of stalls as well as strawberry tea will be available.  New Cumnock Early Childhood Centre also has a sponsored walk on Thursday 16th May 2013

Please come along and visit our new establishment if you have not already done so. Thank you.

Bowling Club

The green is now open and looking better than it has looked over the past couple of years with a large injection of money which has been invested in a private company bringing the green back to its former excellence.  The club is striving to improve the facilities year on year but could be doing with some new members ( not excluding older lads and lasses) to keep up the improving modernisation of the club.

Repairs

Extensive sewage works repairs took place over Saturday and Sunday at Bank Glen to Connelpark.  The road was closed on those two days and opened later in the evening.  These works were overdue, so it’s good to see them being done.  The ditch that runs into a wee burn that runs the length of the Furnace Road and eventually under the main road was cleaned out as well.  Much needed as well as it runs below two gardens and is continually clogged up.

Coffee Bean

The Coffee Bean opens its doors at 9.45am to 11.45 am.  A lovely wee cuppa and a friendly chat in cosy surroundings.   All welcome on Thursday 16th May 2013 in the Church Hall.

Glenafton

The Glens battled their way into the Semi Final of the West of Scotland cup in a tremendous match away to Largs Thistle.

It was played on the best artificial pitch I have ever seen and was graced by a great football match.  The score was one-all at the final whistle.  The shootout was equally exciting and the Glens eventually won by seven penalties to six.  Great stuff and a sporting match to boot.

They could do with a bit of extra backing in this game as we are the only Ayrshire team left in the trophy.

New Cumnock News week ending 12th May 2013

Connel View

It has come to notice that trees/bushes etc are disappearing in the Connel View West park area.  Apart from their natural beauty they have been there for many many years and afford shelter to sheep and cattle in the Winter time and scenic beauty to the general public in the Summer.  Somebody must know what’s going on surely.  High time it was sorted out if you ask me.

A public meeting has been called to update the public on relevant matters ongoing regarding the village at 11.00am on Saturday.   A large turnout is requested on Saturday.

The New Cumnock Newsletters are now available from shops and the two post offices and usual outlets.

Planters were dedicated by the Rev. Helen Cuthbert and are now in the cemetery  ready for use.

Countryside Watch

Spotted two young buzzards in flight being harassed by the crows. The birds are nearly all nesting now.  The House Sparrows are settled in and rearing their young  A Marsh Tit was spotted as well as two Blue Tits hanging upside down feeding on the underside of branches presumably on small insects.

Also saw a Blackbird pulling a worm and not a wee yin out of the grass.

More and more bees appearing and also a Queen wasp .

The elusive Cuckoo still has not been heard by me anyway.  However they appear to winter in the South of France and were tagged.  When they arrived in Somerset .  they did not fancy that and returned to France post haste.

Coffee Bean

The Coffee Beans doors open at the Church Hall at 9.45am to 11.45am.  Everyone welcome for a wee blether and a guid cuppa.  Thursday 9th May. Thank you

New Cumnock News – week ending May  5th 2013

Community Council

The Community Council have reacted quickly to the rumour that the site for the travelling people could be placed at Knockshinnoch former Coal Plant. I sincerely hope no one in the village wants that. Nip it in the bud now, Muirkirk did.

The Community Council have arranged a meeting which will be held in the Community Centre on Saturday 11th May 2013. The time will be advised next week to discuss this issue and also the plans for the Windfarms at High Cumnock and Grievehill. Let’s show the Plook Committee who they are dealing with and the Windfarm situation is very important financially to New Cumnock.

Jim (Peem) Kerr

A wee special mention for the evergreen Jim ( Peem ) Kerr. I found out he has been a member of New Cumnock Bowling Green for sixty eight years and is a life member. He has also been with the Glens fitba team longer, also a life member. He has won many Honours with the bowling and seen many triumphs with Glenafton. Never without a smile and a cheery hiya. He is larger than life and always leads the sing songs wherever he is. Well done Peem!

Countryside Watch

The weather has still got a sting in the tail but a wee bit more sunshine now and again.

Grass needs cutting and getting greener. Spotted first Queen bee I have seen this year. Heres hoping it has a successful season. A Brambling and Goldfinches seen too. The big question will be, is there going to be a cuckoo call, as this species is dying out like a lot of others.

A fantastic coloured moon appeared rising above the Afton Hills. What a sight.

New Cumnock Nursery

The New Cumnock Nursery invited parents / guardians etc to a lovely wee book presentation to the children. The theme being Pirates. Guardians had to assemble a Pirates hat and colour it in. A great time was had by all and there is no better entertainers than the weans. Head teacher Audrey Hill and her staff do a fantastic job with the kids. A trip to The Transport Museum is planned and a Sponsored Walk is coming up to shortly. Keep up the good work folks.
